2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Poor Response
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer direction.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Key Hires
The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
David
Background of the New Head
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Take on the competition with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your squad can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect further news as development advances.
