Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
