Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
